Sure, times are tough. The economy is bad, Washington seems paralyzed, and there’s a steady drumbeat of bad news from Afghanistan. Jimmy Tingle sees all that and still thinks we can live the American dream.

“Every single generation has had challenges,’’ Tingle said. “How was the job market for the Pilgrims?’’

We can’t get bummed out, the Cambridge comedian insists. We have to remember “the big picture of what America is and our own potential as people. Regardless of what’s happening in the economy or with politics, we can’t let it hold us back as individuals.’’

To that end, he has made “Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream,’’ a movie that comes to the Brattle Theatre next weekend.

“I wanted to try to make something to remind not only the audience, but to remind me of what we stand for. What are our values? What are our principles?’’ Tingle said over coffee at Café Algiers, in Harvard Square. “I can’t control the Congress, I can’t control who’s in the White House or what they do. I can’t control the media. I can do what I can do, using the skills I have, to make a contribution.’’

Do you believe what I said in this interview is true?

I did this interview last Friday for the Patriot Ledger by cell phone standing on a corner in Harvard Sq.
Alex Stevens of A & E  – Wicked Local and GateHouse Media, was asking me all these questions about our film “The American Dream” and what it means to me.  I tried to be honest but do you think I’m being too optimistic?
I can’t believe he printed the last line of the interview !
What do you think ?
Enjoy

“More than comic wit…so cheerfully intelligent he makes his audience optimistic in the face of appalling reality.  It takes a serious and well intentioned man to make one laugh to such good effect.”describe the image

“No Cheap Shots, Just “Sense.” Jimmy Tingle’s one-man show doesn’t capitalize on political crisis;
Instead his uplifting Uncommon Sense draws honest laughs.”

Just for Laughs 2011

From Montreal Gazette – Read whole article here

MONTREAL – It’s a wrap for the 29th Just for Laughs festival. Just as well, because our sides are aching from nearly a month’s worth of guffaws.

But the challenge wasn’t just lining up stellar stand-ups and stars from the tube to titillate us. This year’s fest also entailed major change: moving a majority of the indoor and outdoor shows to the Quartier des Spectacles around Place des Arts.

Montrealers can be mightily resistant to change, but the consensus was that the move to centralize to the funkier Quartier des Spectacles – from the former and often ragtag St. Denis St. epicentre – was a major success. Certainly, the comics weren’t complaining. The unfinished portions of Ste. Catherine and St. Urbain Sts. provided them with endless fodder about our endless road construction woes – though it may not be so funny for the rest of us.

The numbers seem to support the move as well. Close to 2 million people – an increase over last year’s attendance figures, according to Just for Laughs – took in the fest’s 2,000-plus indoor and outdoor shows, feauring more than 500 French and English performers from 20 countries. Nearly 135,000 tickets were sold to the 158 indoor shows.

On the anglo side, this year’s fest marked the largest number of gala tickets sold. No big surprise, since the new venue, Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of Place des Arts, is larger than Théâtre St. Denis, the previous site for those shows. It didn’t hurt that Russell Peters hosted four sold-out galas. On the non-gala front, tickets were all gobbled up for the Louis C.K. and Daniel Tosh shows at Théâtre Maisonneuve of Place des Arts.

Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream (pictured above) is a delicious, humorous romp through one man’s probing mind, interspaced with the commentary of notables from Robert Altman to Howard Zinn to Jimmy’s mother Francis (certainly notable to Jimmy). This is not an American Dream that jumps reality. There is criticism, and a look at the underbelly of America, yet Jimmy’s smile of optimism always returns.

A comedian from Boston with national recognition, Tingle’s boxer-like body twists and jabs to the rhythms and meanings of his spoken words. He leaps forward for an exclamation mark! Steps back to give us space to contemplate. Lunges toward the camera to drive home a point! Sweeps his arm wide to build drama. Tingle is working class with a sharp mind, American patriotic with an open mind, funny guy with a wallop of a verbal punch.

After an hour of Tingle’s American Dream, you may not feel better about America, you may not even feel better about the American Dream, but you will definitely feel better. And this is probably Tingle’s hidden agenda: make Americans feel better, which will draw Americans closer together and reduce some of the country’s ugly and destructive divisions.
